Stroke and Heart Problems

STROKE

A stroke can occur in two ways namely due to high blood pressure and due to a blockage in blood vessels due to a stone (thrombose) in the head leading to bursting of the latter.

When the vessel bursts, more fluid penetrates the Cerebro Spinal Fluid which normally absorbs shocks in the brain. Since the influx of fluid in the brain increases, this will create a pressure on the latter resulting in brain damage, which will alter speech, movement and facial expressions.

For instance, if the right hand side of the brain is affected, the left hand side of the body will be affected and vice versa.

If ever you suspect a person has got a stroke, start the FAST protocol.

F = Facial Weakess, the person will be unable to smile, his mouth or eye may be droppy and his saliva will drop. He will lose the symmetry of his face.

A = Arm Weakness, the person will not be able to lift up his arms.

S = Speech Problems, the person will not be able to talk.

T = NOW ITS TIME TO CAL 114 FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. Tell them you conducted the first protocol.

HEART PROBLEMS

ANGINA

Whenever a person does a big physical effort or a physical activity that he does not have the habit to do, he might feel a pain at the level of the heart. This is called ANGINA.

The first step is to tell the casualty to stop whatever he is doing and sit down and relax.

If ever the person has got his Trinitrate tablet (TNT) with him, he can use it. The TNT tablet is a special tablet placed under the tongue as it dilates the coronary artery and it will decrease the pain or it can also be in the form of a spray.

Check if the person is Ok after 5 minutes.

If the person is not Ok, tell him to take a second dose of TNT.

If the pain persists after another 5 minutes, then it is not Angina BUT A HEART ATTACK.

HEART ATTACK

Normally, when a thrombose (stone) enters the artery and blocks it, it causes arterial thrombosis also known as a heart attack.

Whenever a person if suffering from a heart attack, make the person sit down wherever he is in a half sitting position

Call the emergency services.

Tell casualty to use his Angina Medicine that is the TNT.

Tell the person to use 300 mg of Apirin as it will make his blood more fluid.

Tell the person to chew it, if he is unable to do so, crush the medicine and give it to the casualty.

Monitor the person and comfort him until Medical Emergency arrives.

If ever the person stops breathing, INITIATE CPR.

START CPR if person is not breathing
