DIABETIC EMERGENCY

Normally, the pancreas releases insulin in our body in order to break sugar down to produce energy.

However, the pancreas does not function well for some people thereby causing disbalance in their blood sugar level.

A high blood sugar level is termed as Hyperglycemia whereas a low blood sugar level is termed as Hypoglycemia.

Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia is very dangerous as it may lead the person to a coma.

Call 114 if you suspect a case of hyperglycemia.

Monitor the vital signs of the person until Medical Assistance arrives.

Prepare to deal with the person becoming unresponsive.

Start First Aid if person unresponsive

This usually happens due to imbalance between level of insulin and level of blood sugar.

The person will normally know that his blood sugar level has gone low.

If the person has a glucometer, use it to test his blood sugar level.

Help person to sit down and take his glucose tablets if he has any or give him some sugary drink or sweet.

Then, let the person rest.

After some time test blood sugar level again.

Monitor the person if they are starting to feel better.

If their health deteriorates, call 114 and prepare to face an unresponsive casualty.

Start First Aid if person unresponsive
