First aid refers to the initial and immediate assistance given to someone experiencing either a minor or serious illness or injury. The goal of first aid is to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or promote recovery until professional medical services arrive. It is typically administered by someone with basic medical training.
If the brain is deprived from oxygen for more than four (04) minutes, the brain cells will begin to die. Brain cell damage is irrecoverable that is once, damage, it is impossible to recover the damaged brain cells. Then little by little the brain will die until it becomes impossible to save the person even by supplying oxygen to the brain. That is why it is important to start a CPR as soon as it is observed that the casualty has stopped breathing.
If a person loses 1.2 to 2 litres of blood, he enters a state of shock. It means that there is not enough blood in his body to carry oxygen to his vital organs. So, in cases of blood loss, it is important to stop the blood loss as quickly as possible to prevent the casualty to enter this state.
Consider a real event that was documentated by the L'Express Newspaper in 2013 whereby a husband and wife were well dressed and walking on the road. Suddenly, the husband felt uneasy and fell down whilst holding his chest in pain. A group of people approach him as he tries in vain to open his mouth and press his chest. No one knew what to do as they saw him die in front of them. No one knew how to perform a Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) at that moment so as to even attempt to save his life.
The newspaper also claimed that less than 1% of the population had a knowledge of first aid which is a very alarming statistic as it clearly means we are not ready to even attempt to save a person in need from dying.
Furthermore, Mauritius is becoming an ageing population which would trigger a lesser healthy population. Median age moved from 34 to 38 years old showing an ageing population according to the 2022 population census by Statistics Mauritius.

The importance of learning first aid is high as the number of people who died due to heart related diseases was 2056 as per the health statistics report of 2020 of Mauritius. It means that people should be ready anytime to save a person who for instance has suffered a heart attack on the road since the number indicates a higher frequency of this occuring.
In contrast to illness, during the year of 2023, there was 36400 accidents out of which 2355 caused slight or serious injury and 130 were fatal as per Statistics Mauritius.
These incidents and statistics reflect that first aid is a tool which the maximum amount of people must be acquainted with as the high numbers describe the rising number of people who need first aid. Of all those people who died, many of their lives could have been saved if and only if the basic treatments were given to them in time.
So, better prepare ourselves to save each other and be safer everywhere!
The main purpose of this Project is to make First Aid Knowledge easily accessible to everyone. There should be no instance existing whereby a person has died as he could not get first aid treatment on time.
The Android Application that has been created has a goal to become the first aid companion for a person, he can use it in times when there is a casualty to at least stand a chance of saving the person's life instead of just seeing him die in front of our eyes.
This Website/ Application does not Train a person in first aid but rather gives him an in- depth knowledge on the subject such that they can at least help to save a person's life.
This Website/ Application was created for the National Leadership Engine 2024 competition organised by the National Productivity Competitiveness Council (NPCC)
